12 9 12
Note: at the end of today’s Portion of Bible Text, you will find my thoughts on the verses. B.K.
22 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
23 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall eat no manner of fat, of ox, or of sheep, or of goat.
24 And the fat of the beast that dieth of itself, and the fat of that which is torn with beasts, may be used in any other use: but ye shall in no wise eat of it.
25 For whosoever eateth the fat of the beast, of which men offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord, even the soul that eateth it shall be cut off from his people.
26 Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings.
27 Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.
K.J.V. Bible Text
In this reading, we learn that the Lord told the people of Israel that they were not to eat any animal that is offered as sacrifice by fire if it died by itself. They are also not to eat the fat of such animals or eat any blood.
The fact that the Lord tells the people these rules and associates them with such animals as may be used as sacrifices, indicates to me that He did indeed intend the rules that applied to priests in regard to handling animal sacrifices to be an example to the people. And once again, this passage assures me in my conviction that the rules for the handling of sacrifices and the dietary restrictions of the people of Israel relate to the desire of the Lord to keep them healthy and free of diseases, such as those that might be borne by an animal that died of some unknown cause or from eating the “unclean” portions of any animal.
